Darbargadh Poshina

Gujarat, India

A Living Rajput Legacy in the Aravallis

Darbargadh Poshina rises from the tribal heartland of North Gujarat, where the Aravalli hills roll toward the Rajasthan border. For eight generations the family ruled this remote outpost, and today their ancestral fort opens its gates to travellers curious about Adivasi and Garasia tribal culture. Guests are drawn into the rhythms of Poshina’s weekly market, where tribal women arrive in vivid dress and craftsmen forge swords and daggers, shape terracotta horses, and set chunky silver jewellery by hand. A short walk leads to a Jain temple raised in 1214 and a richly carved Shiva shrine, both testament to the region’s deep devotional history.

Within the fort walls, the atmosphere favours warmth over grandeur. Period furniture and antique artifacts fill rooms once occupied by Rajput nobility, while the former zenana courtyard, the fort’s historic women’s quarters, has been reimagined as a shaded retreat for reading, resting or simply watching the day unfold.

Accommodation is thoughtfully appointed, with recently renovated en-suite bathrooms fitted with western fixtures and hot showers, softening the fort’s antiquity with modern comfort. Each room carries its own character, furnished with pieces gathered across generations of family history.

Meals are prepared under the personal supervision of the hostess, who tailors Rajasthani and Gujarati recipes to suit each guest, from subtly spiced Western palates to onion-and-garlic-free Jain fare. Guests are welcome in the kitchen to learn the family’s recipes firsthand. Evenings often close with a folk dance performance lit only by torches and fire, while the rooftop terrace offers an unhurried vantage over the Aravallis as the sun sets behind them.
