Facing the cobblestoned Plaza de las Nazarenas, Inkaterra La Casona occupies a sixteenth-century manor once used as training grounds for an elite corps of Inca soldiers. Spanish conquistador Diego de Almagro and the liberator Simón Bolívar are counted among its historic guests, and five years of careful restoration have preserved the building’s original stonework, exposed beams and colonial detail. As the first Relais & Chateaux property in Peru, it stands at 3,400 metres above sea level, just ten minutes from Cusco’s airport.
The Plaza, Balcón and Patio suites surround the mansion’s main courtyard, each fitted with its own stone fireplace, thermostat-controlled heated floors and a marble bathroom with a deep soaking tub. Colonial furniture, pre-Columbian textiles and original murals fill the halls, while pima cotton linens and handmade Inkaterra toiletries furnish the rooms themselves.
A rich and varied rhythm of excursions runs through a stay here, arranged privately with a guide each morning or afternoon. Nearby, Sacsayhuamán’s monumental stonework and the smaller ruins of Puca Pucará, Qenko and Tambomachay reveal the city’s military and ceremonial past, while a walking tour through the Cathedral, San Blas and the gold-clad Koricancha traces Cusco’s Inca and colonial layers side by side. Further afield, the Sacred Valley offers the salt terraces of Maras, the circular agricultural terraces of Moray, and the market town of Chinchero.
Evenings return guests to the mansion’s dining room, where dishes are built from ingredients sourced close to home, and to the Yacu spa, whose treatments draw on the same local philosophy — a fitting close to days spent among the ruins and terraces of the Sacred Valley.
