The Cabanas

Lamu Archipelago, Kenya

Built by Hand on Kizingoni Beach

At the southern end of Lamu Island, where Kizingoni Beach runs for kilometres beside the Indian Ocean, The Cabanas rests on a raised dune among palms, indigenous trees and flowering shrubs. A 25-minute boat ride through the mangroves from Manda Airport brings guests to the jetty, and from there the island sets the pace.

Shawn, a professional kitesurfer from Hawaii, and Anna, a neuroscientist turned filmmaker raised in East Africa, created The Cabanas on a stretch of sand their family has tended for three decades. Local craftsmen built it the way Lamu has built for a thousand years, in coral stone, lime plaster and makuti thatch, and the property runs on solar power with water filtered naturally through the dunes. An arched colonnade frames the swimming pool.

The cabanas, some on the beachfront and others with ocean views, are private and breezy, with carved Lamu doors, netted beds, white linen and hand-plastered walls. Brass, textiles and ceramics from sister design house Blue Rhino Africa are scattered through each, and there are no televisions or key cards to break the spell.

With no fixed timetable, the rhythm follows the sun, the tide and your appetite, offering a new set of choices each day. Start with a dawn swim, a paddle or yoga in the studio, then explore Lamu Old Town or take a wakeboarding lesson. Full-board meals skip the buffet in favour of fish from the boats, homemade bread, coconut, lime and Swahili spice, served at the pods, barefoot on the sand or around the Captain’s Table. As evening approaches, the dhow sets sail for sunset, followed by stories around the fire pit and, on the right nights, a swim through phosphorescence.

Rope-hung swing beds on a thatched rooftop terrace overlooking the Lamu channel, with dhows and kitesurfers at sunset.
