Fundu Lagoon is on Pemba Island, the sister island to Zanzibar lying across the Pemba Channel to the north. The lodge is situated on a remote and beautiful beach, on the southwestern side of the island with 180-degree views of the Indian Ocean.
Sandy pathways lead past thatched si*ng-areas to a long palm-fringed beach, which bristles with weird crabs and wonderful shells. And, at low de, the stream of brightly dressed local women walking along the beach to market beats any fashion parade. The 18 tented rooms offer sun-warmed showers and comfy beds overlooking the blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Among other amenities, Fundu Lagoon boasts three bars, a restaurant whose food fuses Arabic, Indian, Swahili, and colonial influences, and a healing spa – perfect for ending the day’s activities.
A seascape of deep inlets, mangrove coasts, coral islands, and fringing reefs is a short boat ride away from the resort providing some of the best snorkeling and diving sites in the world. Shallow coral lagoons drop off to spectacular depths supporting a vast range of marine life. PADI courses, with the resident dive instructors, are also available – and there is no be/er place to learn. Non-divers can enjoy dhow cruises, canoeing safaris, game-fishing, inter- dal coast walks plus wake-boarding, windsurfing, and kayaking.
