Built in 1851 on a vast former sheep station, the homestead has five traditional en suite guest rooms, each opening onto a shady verandah. The rooms are air-conditioned and contemporary, but remain sympathetic to their heritage, each with their own character. A comfortable library with deep leather armchairs provides some seclusion for enjoying a quiet drink and a good book and a wet edge pool overlooks the Arkaba Creek. Dining takes place around an old wool classing table and sophisticated... menus feature such native ingredients as foraged bush tomatoes, piquant quandongs, native pears and acacia pods, paired with South Australian wines. Arkaba is proudly without wifi or televisions allowing the focus to remain purely on the quietude of the landscape.
Countless bird and wildlife species emerge to drink at waterholes along the dry creek beds that are lined with river red gums, but it is the geology that makes this region so special. Arkaba’s topography offers some of outback Australia’s most breathtaking scenery and this is best explored by 4×4 or on foot via the guided excursions offered from the Homestead.
With warm hospitality and an easy sense of style, escaping to Arkaba’s beautifully restored homestead feels like staying with friends in the country.
