Bateleur Camp

Maasai Mara, Kenya

Old-World Glamour On The Mara's Wild Edge

Bateleur Camp sits at the foot of the Oloololo Escarpment, where forest gives way to the open grass of the Maasai Mara‘s Mara Triangle. Below the towering cliffs where the closing scene of Out of Africa was filmed, two intimate camps look out over plains that fill with wildebeest and zebra during the Great Migration, with river crossings often visible within half an hour’s drive. Kenya’s Maasai heartland surrounds the camp on every side, and the Mara River threads past on its way toward the Serengeti border, an hour further south.

Inside, the camp channels the golden age of 1920s safari travel: polished hardwood floors, oriental rugs, leather Chesterfield sofas and cabinets of fine antiques recall an era of mahogany writing desks and silver tea services. Brass fittings, worn leather trunks and old maps sit alongside bookshelves of bound volumes, while each tent’s private deck holds a sunken daybed and personal bar for watching the plains change colour through the day.

Luxury Tents sit well apart amid the forest, each pairing an en-suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers and a copper star bath open to the night sky, and each fronted by a private veranda over the plains. One adjoining Luxury Family Tent links a twin and a double room via an interior passage, giving families their own private wing within camp. Every stay includes a pair of Swarovski Optik binoculars, for game drives or for quiet afternoons spent watching from the veranda.

Meals move with the mood of the day: hearty bush breakfasts staged out on the open plains, lunches on the shaded deck or beside the infinity pool, and candlelit dinners around the South Camp boma fire, much of the produce grown in the camp’s own vegetable garden. By day the bar pours Kenyan coffee; by night it turns to a collection of sixteen craft gins, best enjoyed before a Maasai dance performance or the hush that settles over camp once the stars appear above the Mara.
