Set within the historic town of Ollantaytambo, El Albergue occupies a beautiful, garden-wrapped property beside the train station that carries travellers onward to Machu Picchu. What began as a family home remains one today, and that sense of welcome runs through every corner of the property, from the terraced gardens to the working farm that supplies the kitchen. Snow-capped peaks and ancient Inca terraces frame the views in every direction, and the sound of departing trains adds a gentle rhythm to the days spent here.
Accommodation ranges from garden rooms shaded by jasmine, where hummingbirds gather and hammocks sway, to balcony rooms overlooking the mountains from the property’s historic main building. Families are especially well catered for in the two-bedroom Casita, complete with its own kitchen and dining space for those who wish to cook with produce fresh from the farm. A relaxed, activity-rich rhythm runs through a stay here, with guests free to choose their own mix of pursuits from one day to the next.
Food and drink are central to the experience. The organic farm supplies vegetables for the kitchen, while the Pachamanca lunch introduces guests to the ancient Andean tradition of earth-oven cooking. Café Mayu roasts coffee grown in the valley, and Destilería Andina produces spirits using traditional methods and locally sourced ingredients. After exploring, guests can retreat to the natural eucalyptus steam sauna to ease tired legs.
Beyond the property, El Albergue’s commitment to sustainability runs deep, from its Climate Positive status to its support of Valle Sagrado Verde and the Casa Kuska education project. It makes an ideal base for exploring the cobbled streets and imposing ruins of Ollantaytambo, before the short train journey onward into the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu itself.
