Gmundner Lodge

Kalahari, Namibia

Where The Desert Meets The Sky

Gmundner Lodge lies south-east of Windhoek, cradled between the Kalahari Desert to the east and the Khomas Plateau to the west. Spread across 6,000 hectares of camelthorn trees and wild sage, the lodge offers guests an immersive introduction to Namibia’s wilderness, with the Kalahari’s resident wildlife often visible from the grounds themselves.

The main lodge is steeped in safari nostalgia, its handcrafted campaign furniture, antique curios, telescopes and binoculars evoking a bygone era of exploration. Billowing canvas walls roll away to open the interior to the surrounding landscape, while cloud-like loungers ring the infinity pool. As evening approaches, lanterns and candlelight replace the desert sun, and the deck and boma fire offer a front-row seat to an onyx sky thick with stars.

Guests choose between the Luxury Double Suite and Luxury Family Suite, each set apart from the main lodge and cocooned beneath its own canvas roof. Leather chairs, mahogany furniture and romantic four-poster beds furnish the interiors, while indoor and outdoor bathrooms, complete with freestanding clawfoot baths and outdoor showers, invite guests to bathe beneath the open sky. A private shaded lounge and in-suite bar round out each retreat.

Dining draws directly from the Gmundner Farm, where fruit, vegetables, eggs, dairy, beef and venison are grown and reared for the kitchen at Restaurant Friesacher. Dishes are served on Gmundner ceramic tableware, a nod to the family’s Austrian heritage dating to 1492, and paired with award-winning South African wines. Between meals, an unhurried, activity-rich pattern, found throughout the lodge, presents guests with a choice of game drives, horse riding, e-biking, helicopter flights or an afternoon at the spa.
