Kutch Safari Resort

Bhuj, India

A Bhunga Retreat Above the Water

On a low hill fifteen kilometres from Bhuj, Kutch Safari Resort looks out over the still expanse of the Rudramata reservoir, where painted storks and flamingos gather along the shallows and the Banni grasslands stretch beyond. It is a landscape of wide horizons and quiet, broken only by birdsong and the occasional call of village life drifting up from the water’s edge. This is Gujarat at its most elemental, and the resort has been built to sit within it rather than apart from it.

The cottages take their form from the bhunga, the round mud-and-thatch dwelling native to Kutch, reinterpreted here with modern comfort. Walls are finished in lippan, the region’s traditional mirror-and-mud appliqué work, applied by local artisans in patterns drawn from Kutchi textile and folk motifs. The effect is tactile and specific to place, a quiet showcase of craft rather than decoration for its own sake.

Each cottage opens onto a private porch facing the lake, furnished with a jhula swing and armchairs for watching the sun rise over the water. Interiors are air-conditioned and simply appointed, with en-suite bathrooms and the kind of unfussy comfort that suits early starts for jeep safaris into the White Rann or day trips to the Harappan ruins of Dholavira.

Meals are taken on an open veranda above the lake, built around Gujarati and regional Kutchi dishes cooked to order, with fish and mutton available on request. Evenings often bring local musicians performing Kutchi and Sufi folk songs by firelight, accompanied by traditional instruments, a fitting close to a day spent among the villages, craftspeople and wide skies of Kutch.
