Just 40km from the port city of Valparaiso lies La Casona, nestled amongst the certified-organic Matetic Vineyards. This century-old guesthouse, with its manicured gardens and towering palms, is in the 9,000-hectare Valle de Rosario and is owned by the Matetic family.

The seven guest bedrooms are set in a horseshoe-shaped colonial hacienda around a central courtyard filled with bright rhododendrons, leafy shrubs and towering palm trees. This was once the family home and its pink adobe walls and long columned walkways brim with colonial charm. Each room is named after a type of wine and is decorated with patrician oak furniture, velvety curtains and gilt-framed oil paintings.

This is the ideal place to explore the world of wine so kick off with a tour of the oval-roofed winery designed by Norway’s Laurence Odfjell, taste the estate’s Syrah, Pinot Noir & Chardonnay and learn about the principles of organic wine making, bottling and storage. Offsite you can visit Pablo Neruda’s house – now a museum dedicated to Chile’s Nobel prize winning poet, or spend a day in colourful Valparaiso, Chile’s main port. You can also saddle up for forays through the Rosario Valley on a Chilean horse or take a guided, or self-guided, hike along the ‘Huayan Trail’. If you are looking to simply relax, there are canopied day beds and lounges surrounding the pool. Breakfast and dinner are served in the hacienda’s dining room and there is a gourmet restaurant that serves lunch, accompanied by bottles of the estate’s wine, by the lake.
