The Lamu Archipelago lies 2° south of the Equator along Kenya’s coast. The archipelago is a chain of islands separated from the mainland by a narrow channel bordered with dense mangrove forest and protected from the Indian Ocean by coral reefs and large sand dunes. Lamu Island has been a port of call for travellers for centuries and the many historical sites are proof of the area’s long and rich history.

Peponi Hotel is located in Shella village, 2 miles from Lamu town. It offers 28 en suite rooms, all enjoying an ocean view. ‘Superior’ rooms are larger with a private outside area and swing bed. The restaurant is noteworthy for its fresh seafood pulled straight from the ocean, most notably its giant prawns and sushi. Guests can enjoy a lazy lunch on the roof terrace, elegant meals in the formal dining room or al fresco feasts under the stars. Peponi’s legendary bar is a popular spot for guests and well heeled locals alike—be sure to try the signature ‘Old Pal’ cocktail.

The streets of Lamu town are narrow, cool and quiet. They are surprisingly in􀀀mate spaces enclosed by massive stone buildings whose thick coral rag walls give the town its dis􀀀nct colour and texture. In December 2001 Lamu Town became a world heritage site in order to protect the oldest inhabited Swahili settlement south of the Sahara. This history combines with the reefs and beaches of Lamu’s tropical setting to provide a peaceful beach holiday or the ideal spot for some post‐safari R&R.
