Rann Riders
Little Rann of Kutch,, India
Where the Wild Asses Roam
In the Little Rann of Kutch, a vast expanse of seasonal salt desert in Gujarat, Rann Riders sits at the edge of one of India’s most singular landscapes. This is the last stronghold of the Asiatic Wild Ass, and a migratory corridor drawing over 250 recorded bird species, from lesser and greater flamingos to houbara bustards. The lodge takes its cue from the region’s cultural heritage, offering an inside-out style of travel built around genuine encounters with this rarely visited corner of India.
Accommodation borrows its architectural language from local communities, with cottages styled after the round Bhunga homes of Rabari shepherds and the Kooba dwellings of the Bajania people. Locally made fabrics, considered furnishings and well-designed en-suite bathrooms bring a rustic elegance to each cottage, while the wider grounds are being reworked with indigenous, water-frugal planting in place of thirsty lawns.
Two dedicated Dasada Premium wing blocks overlook either the lake or the surrounding croplands, each with its own swimming pool and choice of private dining spaces, ideal for a family or group of friends travelling together. Elsewhere, Safari Cottages offer roomy sit-out areas and stylishly rustic interiors, while two Desjouaux-designed pools and a central lounge anchor the wider lodge.
Days are shaped around the Rann itself: jeep, walking, cycling, horse and camel safaris tracking wild ass, fox and hyena, with excursions to the Harappan ruins of Dholavira and the artisan communities of the Mirs and Rabaris. At the Flamingo Restaurant, named for Gujarat’s state bird, buffet breakfasts with live stations give way to a curated à la carte menu, while alfresco tandoor dinners and dining under a million stars at the desert’s edge round out the experience.

The trip exceeded my expectations and was the best family holiday I have ever had. Our children simply loved it and now I know more about African wildlife than they do about our own farm animals.

We wanted the opportunity to see as many wildlife parks as possible and the Classic Safari Company provided an action-packed itinerary that included six, with 11 tiger sightings and nine leopard. This was overlaid with an introduction to Jaisalmer, Jaipur and the 'real' India. Pench and Panna were the hidden gems of a really great trip, very well organised, seamless and enjoyable. As a solo traveller I felt incredibly safe at all times. I want to go back!
Mark Taylor
Exellent and wonderful, reaching way above expectations.
