A Sanctuary Behind The Red Door
Within the walled quiet of Bab Hmar, the “Red Gate” quarter that borders Marrakech’s Royal Palace, Riad Malaika sits along a narrow derb only steps from the Medina’s rhythm yet entirely apart from it. Behind an unassuming door, the riad opens onto a sun-washed courtyard where light moves freely through the day, catching the turquoise of the plunge pool and the green of a lush garden. Badii and Bahia Palaces, the souks and Jemaa el-Fna are all within easy walking distance, while taxis run day and night for those venturing further towards the Atlas foothills and nearby golf courses.
Inside, plasterwork carved by hand, waxed timber and clean, uncluttered lines speak to a design language that honours Moroccan tradition while feeling entirely at ease in the present. Marble pathways lead through the garden towards a traditional hammam, treatment rooms and a small gymnasium, each conceived for the quiet restoration of body and mind.
Six individually dressed rooms and suites take their names and palettes from the natural world: the deep, character-filled tones of Ebène, the calming cedar-scented interiors of Cèdre, the soft serenity of the Amani suite with its adjoining chamber. Each is generously proportioned, air-conditioned and finished with an en-suite bathroom, king bed, television & Wi-Fi throughout.
As evening approaches, the rooftop terrace comes into its own, a place for breakfast beneath open sky or a sundowner shared as the light softens over the Medina’s rooftops. Massages can be taken en plein air on the spa terrace above, or guests may simply linger over a pot of mint tea before an unhurried dinner arranged through the riad’s concierge, one of many quietly personal touches that define a stay here.
