Sundowners Beneath the Roof of Africa

Between the plains of Amboseli National Park and the Chyulu Hills, the Kilitome Conservancy protects a vital corridor used by elephants moving through the ecosystem. Tawi Lodge is the only lodge on this land, set among acacia trees a short drive from Kimana Gate, with Kilimanjaro rising above the horizon on clear mornings.

The lodge treads lightly. It runs entirely on solar power, grows much of its own produce and holds Ecotourism Kenya‘s Gold certification, the country’s highest eco-accreditation. The main areas open onto a swimming pool above an active waterhole, where elephants and plains game come to drink through the heat of the day.

The cottages are spaced well apart for privacy, each with a fireplace for cool Amboseli evenings and a veranda looking out over the conservancy. Interiors are elegant and generously furnished, with en-suite bathrooms and plenty of room to rest between outings, and a small spa offers treatments after a long morning in the field.

An easy, activity-rich rhythm offers a new selection of choices each day. Open-sided vehicles head into Amboseli in search of its famous elephant herds, while the conservancy adds experiences forbidden within park boundaries: walks with Maasai guides who explain the plants used for medicine and natural dyes, night drives after nocturnal wildlife and gentle camel rides. As the light softens, camp chairs and a fire are set out at a sundowner spot with Kilimanjaro behind, before dinner back at the lodge.
