Villa Barranco
Lima, Peru
Where Barranco's Bohemian Spirit Meets the Sea
In 1920, Rosalía Zignano de Botto acquired part of the former El Pacayar estate, and three years later Polish architect Ricardo de Jaxa Malachowski designed twin mansions with tiled roofs, ornate façades, and a central tower. Divided in the 1940s and later reunited under one roof, the property was declared a National Monument in 1987 for its architectural significance and its place in Barranco’s history. Restoration brought local artisans back to the sculpted façades and mosaic floors, recovering original tiles and replicating lost pieces to the same French seal that once adorned them.
Accommodation is arranged across the two restored houses, each room bright with exterior views and finished with soft, calming design. Beds convert between a two-metre double and twin singles, and every room comes with a hairdryer, individual safety box, and private bathroom. The Master Suites rise across two levels with a private terrace facing the Pacific horizon, an ideal perch for watching the light change over the Green Coast.
Mornings begin on the rooftop terrace, where breakfast draws on Peruvian ingredients alongside international classics, all set against ocean views. Inside, the guest library recalls a collector’s living room — a hushed, book-lined space made for slow reading and quiet reflection between excursions into the neighbourhood.
Barranco itself is the draw beyond the walls: an arts district of galleries, murals, and bohemian cafés, with the Puente de los Suspiros just five minutes away. Kennedy Park sits fifteen minutes off, and the Plaza de Armas ten, putting the whole of Lima’s historic centre and coastline within easy reach.

The trip exceeded my expectations and was the best family holiday I have ever had. Our children simply loved it and now I know more about African wildlife than they do about our own farm animals.

We wanted the opportunity to see as many wildlife parks as possible and the Classic Safari Company provided an action-packed itinerary that included six, with 11 tiger sightings and nine leopard. This was overlaid with an introduction to Jaisalmer, Jaipur and the 'real' India. Pench and Panna were the hidden gems of a really great trip, very well organised, seamless and enjoyable. As a solo traveller I felt incredibly safe at all times. I want to go back!
Mark Taylor
Exellent and wonderful, reaching way above expectations.
Elizabeth Mackintosh
