Windamere Estate

Darjeeling, India

Charming Colonial Hotel

The nostalgic Windamere Hotel has been serving guests since the 19th Century when the foothills of the Himalayas became a summer retreat during the days of the British Raj.  The temperate climate of the hill stations around Darjeeling offered perfect conditions for growing tea, and the Windamere became the haunt of English and Scottish tea planters looking to make their fortune.

Today Windamere Estate is the best-located hotel in Darjeeling, sitting atop the aptly-named Observatory Hill.  With 41 rooms, divided across several cottages, villas and the central house. The Ada Villa, which was built in the 1880s, is the main building on the property and the most impressive with each suite within named after some of the hotel’s most notable former guests – the Begum Aga Khan, Prince Peter of Greece & Denmark, the Princess of Siam and more.  Each royal suite is furnished with framed maps, photos, and old documents on the walls,  dark. period oak wardrobes, sofas and beds draped in luxurious materials, and Victorian roll-top bathtubs in the bathrooms.

Indian and Continental cuisines are served in the large dining room for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  And a traditional Afternoon Tea, including scones, cake, and finger sandwiches, is offered daily between 4 and 6pm.

The hotel is ideally situated for exploring the historic town of Darjeeling, world-renowned for its colonial history and tea estates, along with bustling bazaars and Buddhist monasteries.  And, of course, you can revel in the uninterrupted views of the spectacular Himalayan Mountains – glimpsing Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal and Sikkim, against a stupendous backdrop of twenty of the highest mountain peaks in the world.
