Xigera Safari Lodge

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Tented camp overlooking the Delta's floodplains

Xigera — pronounced ‘kee-jera’ and named for the pied kingfisher that nests among its waterways — occupies a private concession within Botswana’s Moremi Game Reserve, where the Okavango Delta unfolds across seasonal floodplains, papyrus channels and ancient riverine forest. Guests arrive via an elevated bridge over a papyrus-lined waterway — a quietly theatrical introduction to the only camp on its concession, set within a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What immediately distinguishes Xigera from any other camp in Africa is its commitment to art on a breathtaking scale. Home to the continent’s largest private contemporary art collection in hospitality, the lodge was conceived in collaboration with 80 of Africa’s most acclaimed designers. Hand-carved furniture by Adam Birch, woven nest seats by Porky Hefer and a copper fireplace cast in the shape of an Okavango lily define the communal spaces, while a blacksmith-forged fire pit sculpture by Conrad Hicks commands the boma.

Individually designed suites sit suspended on stilts beneath ancient jackalberry, mangosteen and leadwood trees, connected by raised wooden walkways and gazing out over the floodplains beyond. Each takes its design inspiration from the flight of Pel’s fishing owl, its interiors layering timber, bronze and handcrafted textiles across generous spaces with a private deck and gazebo, freestanding bathtub and both indoor and outdoor showers. A dedicated two-bedroom Family Suite connects two ensuite bedrooms via a shared lounge.

The guiding philosophy at Xigera is “anything, any time” — a genuine commitment to flexibility that extends from bush breakfasts on private decks to candlelit boma dinners and chef’s table experiences in the open-plan kitchen. Activities range from game drives and walking safaris to glass-bottomed mokoro excursions, motorboat trips, helicopter flights, seasonal fishing and a Baobab Treehouse sleepout beneath an open sky. A spa, daily yoga programme, Technogym and heated pool complete the picture.

A traditional mokoro carrying guests through a carpet of white water lilies in the Okavango Delta, poled by a standing guide with a lone tree on the distant horizon.
