Planet Baobab

Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana

Funky en-suite huts

Along the dry and dusty road between Maun and Francistown, where elephants tear up any tree that dares to raise its head, a large grey hulk looms into view—a giant anteater! Follow the side road pointed out by that anteater snout and you’ll discover the intriguingly named Planet Baobab, a funky oasis in the middle of nowhere. This is the baobab capital of the world, where trees average 4,000 years in age, and the vast salt pans of the Makgadikgadi—a lunar landscape the size of Switzerland—lie just beyond.

The accommodation is quirky, colourful and full of charm. There are 18 thatched huts—eight Bakalanga, seven Baobab and three Bakalanga Family—each inspired by traditional Botswana village design. Arranged in friendly clusters beneath the ancient baobabs, the huts feature vibrant murals,...

An absolutely fantastic travel company - every one of the many trips they have organised for us over 22 years have been faultless and fabulous.

Thank you for putting together the ancestral adventure of a lifetime. I cannot speak highly enough of the trip. The transfers went smoothly, the accommodation was excellent, the drivers were amazing as they manoeuvred through the traffic and every tour guide had a great deal of knowledge and information. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The contrast of poverty and riches of the country was striking, from the beggars in the street and struggles of the poor to the spectacular, impressive sights of the forts and monuments. There were so many highlights. A moment in time that will never happen again.
