DISPATCHES FROM EXOTIC LANDS
What you wear on safari matters. It needs to be practical and versatile, and given that weight limits and luggage restrictions on charter flights are very strict, every piece you pack needs to earn its keep. A safari is absolutely not a fashion show, and since complementary laundry is available at most camps and lodges many people choose to wear the same 3 or 4 shirts on a wear-wash-repeat basis. But there’s also no need to forgo your sense of style if that is important to you. So with that in mind, here are three of our top picks for effortless style on safari!
Troy Tracker Jacket
We love the Tracker Jacket from Troy London, which is tailored and smart, yet hardwearing and very wearable both on and off safari. TROY is a British fashion brand which outfits HRH the Princess of Wales and Rita Ora among its list of high profile clientele. It also just so happens to have been founded by Rosie and Lucia Ruck Keene, who are the nieces of Classic Safari Company director Julie McIntosh.
The brand focuses on elegant, timeless and sustainable outerwear which seamlessly takes its wearer from the British countryside to the African bush or the jungles of Bengal.
They are also staunch supporters of conservation, partnering with the Prince’s Countryside Fund in the UK and Rewildling Rajasthan in India with Sujàn Safaris, who offer luxury wildlife safaris from glamourous camps such as Sher Bagh and Jawai. They even produced a TROY London x SUJÁN Special Edition Tracker Jacket complete with red stitching inspired by the traditional turbans of the Rabari tribe that roam the Jawai wilderness, coexisting peacefully amongst wild leopards.

Classic Safari Company ‘Rugged Luxury’ luggage
Across Africa most charter planes have small baggage compartments and restrictive weight limitations as a strict safety requirement to ensure the balance and carrying capacity of small aircraft. Pilots need to be able to manipulate bags to get them into the hold meaning that hard shelled Samsonites and the like are a no-no!
We offer fabulously stylish ‘Rugged Luxury’ canvas and leather gear bags that look gorgeous, are incredibly hardwearing, and are ideal for African wildlife safaris which usually involve charter planes. These are made bespoke for The Classic Safari Company and come in two sizes:
Small
Dimensions: Length 60 cm, Width 31 cm (46L)
Approximate weight full with clothing: 12‐15 kgs
Large
Dimensions: Length 71 cm, Width 34 cm (60L)
Approximate weight full with clothing: 15‐20 kgs
Both items come with a leather shoulder strap & luggage tag. Please contact us for further details and to purchase, but bear in mind that we only hold a handful in stock at any one time and the lead time for new items can be long as they are all made to order, just for us. Exclusivity is worth waiting for!
Phylli Hat
A Phylli hat is a must-have accessory both on safari and back at home in the Australian bush, so this will be a piece to cherish for far longer than the duration of your holiday. With every one hand made in a small studio in Scone, NSW, they celebrate homegrown talent and the noble art of traditional hat making, whilst also giving a heartfelt nod to modern day design. Although they have proved especially popular among our women only travel groups, there is also a collection ‘for him’, and a ‘saddle up’ collection, perfect for our luxury horse riding holidays.
Phylli hats are noteworthy for their craftsmanship and quality, and features such as native bird feathers, Japanese ribbons and antique sari silks sustainably sourced from India see them effortlessly carrying their wearer across international fashion borders.
