Find your feet in Fayoum

Do you like to arrive a few days ahead of time to ‘find your feet’ and settle into a new time zone before starting a tour? Then this pre‐tour extension to our Treasures of Egypt itinerary is for you! Fayoum is a desert oases just a short drive from Cairo, where lush landscapes, ancient history, and desert beauty converge. And nestled in the charming Tunis Village of Fayoum is the boutique retreat Lazib Inn & Spa. Here traditional Egyptian architecture meets contemporary luxury with each of the inn’s eight spacious suites individually decorated with handcrafted furniture, vibrant textiles, and locally inspired artwork, creating an atmosphere that feels both authentic and refined.

The suites offer private terraces with sweeping views over Lake Qarun and the lush countryside, making them a perfect spot to relax. The lush gardens and three swimming pools provide a serene backdrop for relaxation, while the spa offers a range of treatments designed to rejuvenate and pamper, using locally sourced ingredients. You can also savour gourmet meals, with the restaurant featuring a fusion of Egyptian flavours with Mediterranean influences, all made from fresh, local ingredients. Dining is offered al fresco on the lawn, by the pool or within the air conditioned restaurant.

While staying at Lazib Inn you can do as little or as much as you wish. You may wish to wander through the village to discover its famous pottery workshops, where local artisans craft beautiful ceramics and welcome visitors to learn about their traditional techniques. And there are opportunities for birdwatching at the nearby Wadi El‐Hitan, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its impressive, ancient whale fossils. If you are up for some excitement go four wheel driving through the sand dunes and view the unique rock formations of the Fayoum Desert.

However you choose to spend your time acclimatising we will gather each evening to watch the sun set from the terrace with a drink in hand before a quiet evening, soaking in the tranquil ambiance of this oasis escape.

While staying at the Lazib Inn you can do as little or as much as you wish, and there is no obligation to do anything at all, but should you wish to explore the following activities offer a unique perspective on Fayoum.

Wadi El‐Hitan (Valley of the Whales) Tour

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Wadi El‐Hitan is famous for its well‐preserved fossil remains of prehistoric whales. You can take a guided tour through this open‐air museum, learning about the ancient sea that once covered this desert and marveling at the fossils embedded in the sand.

Desert Safari and Sand Dunes Tour

For adventure seekers, a desert safari offers a thrilling experience, taking you off‐road through the sandy dunes of Fayoum’s desert. You can explore unique rock formations and capture breathtaking desert vistas. When combined with a visit to the Valley of the whales a picnic lunch is included.

Tunis Village Pottery and Art Tour

Tunis Village is famous for its pottery, and a tour offers a chance to visit local workshops, meet artisans, and try your hand at pottery‐making. You can also explore galleries and craft shops that showcase the unique art of Fayoum.

Esh Baladi Bread Baking Class

In Egypt, traditional oven‐baked bread is called “esh baladi” and is a vital part of Egyptian cuisine. This bread is baked in clay ovens known as taboons, which give it a distinctive smoky flavour. Early in the morning learn to bake this round, slightly puffy shaped bread with local women who have perfected the technique over generations. The half hour class typically takes place in an open courtyard, where the earthy scents of freshly ground flour and herbs set the scene, and allows for the remainder of the day at leisure.
