A small group journey for women

Japan's Creative Heart

Japan | November 2026

Where Old Meets New

This journey is designed for women who value depth over speed, and creativity over crowds. It moves gently through Japan’s cultural heart, balancing major centres with lesser-known towns and islands where art and daily life intertwine seamlessly.

Your adventure begins in Tokyo, offering a gentle introduction before travelling west by first-class Shinkansen to Okayama and the historic canal town of Kurashiki. Time slows as you wander white-walled storehouses, artisan workshops, and museums lining the Bikan Quarter, before continuing to Uno Port, gateway to the Seto Inland Sea.

On Naoshima and Teshima, contemporary art is experienced in dialogue with landscape. Sculptural museums, architectural icons by Tadao Ando, and installations woven into fishing villages and rice terraces invite reflection rather than spectacle. Ferry crossings, sea air, and unhurried lunches reinforce the sense of calm immersion.

The final chapter unfolds in Kyoto, where refined aesthetics, craft traditions, and spiritual spaces create a deeply restorative rhythm. Temple gardens, contemporary tea ceremonies, pottery streets, and countryside excursions to Miyama offer insight into both historic and living Japan.

Throughout, the journey balances structure with space, offering shared experiences alongside moments of quiet personal discovery.

10 DAYS OF CREATIVITY

DAY 1 | SAT 21 NOV | ARRIVE TOKYO | 1 NIGHT

Arrive into Tokyo, where the energy of modern Japan hums quietly beneath layers of ritual, order, and design. After clearing immigration and collecting luggage, transfer independently or by pre-arranged private vehicle to your hotel in Ginza. This central district offers an elegant introduction to the city, with wide boulevards, refined architecture, and a sense of calm that belies Tokyo’s scale.

With arrival times scattered throughout the afternoon and evening, today is deliberately unstructured. Settle into your room, refresh after your journey, or take a gentle walk through the surrounding streets, perhaps pausing at a café or quietly observing the rhythm of city life. This first night is about rest and acclimatisation, allowing body and mind to ease into Japan’s pace before the journey unfolds.

Accommodation: Millennium Mitsui Garden Hotel Ginza

DAY 2 | SUN 22 NOV | TOKYO TO KURASHIKI VIA OKAYAMA | 1 NIGHT

After breakfast, meet the group for a warm welcome and tour briefing before transferring to the station for your first-class Shinkansen journey to Okayama. Travelling at speed yet in remarkable comfort, the train ride offers glimpses of changing landscapes as urban sprawl gives way to countryside.

On arrival, explore Okayama Korakuen, one of Japan’s most celebrated landscape gardens. Designed for strolling contemplation, its open lawns, ponds, and carefully framed views offer a masterclass in Japanese garden aesthetics. Across the river, Okayama Castle rises with its distinctive black exterior, earning its nickname, Crow Castle.

If time allows, visit the Hayashibara Museum of Art, housed in a former guesthouse of the castle and home to an impressive private collection of ceramics, armour, textiles, and fine art. Continue by private vehicle to Kurashiki, where you check into your hotel and enjoy a relaxed evening, easing into the town’s gentle, historic atmosphere.

Accommodation: – Royal Park Hotel Kurashiki – 1 Night
Meals: – Breakfast, bento lunch, light dinner

DAY 3 | MON 23 NOV | KURASHIKI TO UNO PORT | 3 NIGHTS

Spend the morning exploring Kurashiki’s beautifully preserved Bikan Historical Quarter. Once a prosperous rice distribution centre during the Edo Period, the canal-lined district is now a harmonious blend of history, art, and everyday life. White-walled storehouses, stone bridges, and willow trees create an atmosphere ideal for unhurried wandering, with galleries, boutiques, and cafés inviting quiet discovery.

Depart Kurashiki by private vehicle, stopping en route at the Betty Smith Jean Museum. This unexpectedly fascinating visit explores the history of Japanese denim craftsmanship and offers the opportunity to design bespoke, made-to-measure jeans for those who wish.

Continue to Uno Port, a relaxed harbour town and gateway to the Seto Inland Sea. Check into your hotel and take time to unwind, perhaps enjoying the onsen facilities or simply watching ferries come and go. Dinner is enjoyed in-house, rounding out a day that bridges past and present with ease.

Accommodation: – Uno Hotel – 3 Nights
Meals: – Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 4 | TUE 24 NOV | NAOSHIMA ART ISLAND

This morning, board a ferry across the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea to Naoshima, an island that has become synonymous with contemporary art and architecture. On arrival, explore the Art House Project, where abandoned village homes have been transformed into site-specific artworks, each responding to the building’s history and surroundings.

Continue to the Naoshima New Museum of Art, followed by the iconic Chichu Art Museum, both designed by Tadao Ando. Built largely underground, Chichu is a powerful exploration of space, light, and form, where art and architecture are inseparable.

Throughout the day, pauses are made to absorb the island itself, its fishing villages, coastal views, and quiet rhythms. Before returning to the port, see additional installations, including Yayoi Kusama’s instantly recognisable pumpkin sculpture and the striking Marine Station at Miyanoura Port. Ferry back to Uno Port in the evening, with time to relax after a richly layered day.

DAY 5 | WED 25 NOV | TESHIMA ART ISLAND

After forwarding luggage ahead to Kyoto, depart by ferry to Teshima, an island where art, agriculture, and landscape exist in delicate balance. Once affected by depopulation, Teshima has been revitalised through thoughtful creative projects that respect its rural character.

Travel around the island by private vehicle, visiting installations that draw on themes of community, nature, and global connection. A highlight is Yokoo House, where bold artistic expression is woven into a traditional setting. Lunch is enjoyed at a restaurant overlooking the sea, featuring dishes made with locally sourced island ingredients.

In the afternoon, visit the remarkable Teshima Art Museum. Set within terraced rice fields, its sculptural concrete form invites visitors into a space defined by light, water, and silence. The experience is contemplative and deeply moving. Return to Uno Port by ferry and gather for a celebratory dinner, marking the conclusion of your time among the art islands.

DAY 6 | THU 26 NOV | UNO PORT TO KYOTO | 4 NIGHTS

After breakfast, transfer back to Okayama Station and board the Shinkansen to Kyoto, Japan’s cultural heart. On arrival, travel directly to Shōrenin Temple, an elegant complex originally built as a residence rather than a religious structure. Set against the green slopes of the Higashiyama Mountains, its gardens, ponds, and quiet halls invite reflection.

Continue the day with a contemporary Japanese tea ceremony held within a restored machiya warehouse. Here, tea is prepared with calm precision, accompanied by delicate sweets, encouraging mindfulness and presence.

Later, transfer to your hotel and settle in before enjoying dinner together. The evening offers a sense of arrival, both geographically and emotionally, as Kyoto becomes your base for the days ahead.

Accommodation: – Nohga Hotel – 4 Nights
Meals: – Breakfast, 3 x lunch, 2 x dinner

DAY 7 | FRI 27 NOV | KYOTO ARTS & CRAFTS

Begin the day at the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design, where the city’s 74 recognised traditional craft categories are explored through modern displays and rotating exhibitions. The visit offers insight into how centuries-old skills continue to shape contemporary Japanese design.

From here, browse a thoughtfully curated art and lifestyle bookstore, followed by visits to galleries and ceramic studios showcasing modern interpretations of folk art. Lunch is enjoyed beside a quiet canal near Shirakawa Bridge, where local ingredients from the Tango Peninsula are prepared with care.

Return to the hotel via Shinmonzen Street, renowned for its antique shops specialising in pottery, scrolls, paintings, and prints. The evening is free, with the option to join an informal group dinner at a favourite local restaurant.

DAY 8 | SAT 28 NOV | MIYAMA VILLAGE EXCURSION

Travel beyond Kyoto into the forested mountains of Miyama, a region long cherished as a rural retreat. The landscape shifts to steep hills, rivers, and traditional hamlets, offering a glimpse into an older way of life.

Explore Kayabuki no Sato, a beautifully preserved village of thatched-roof houses, alongside local museums, shrines, and artisan spaces, subject to opening schedules. The day unfolds at a gentle pace, allowing time to absorb both architecture and setting.

Lunch features handmade soba noodles prepared with local buckwheat and spring water, served in a traditional farmhouse. In the late afternoon, return to Kyoto, arriving with time to relax or enjoy a quiet evening.

DAY 9 | SUN 29 NOV | KYOTO POTTERY & HERITAGE

Visit the former home and studio of Kawai Kanjiro, a seminal figure in Japan’s mingei movement. Preserved as it was during his lifetime, the house offers intimate insight into his creative process and philosophy, with ceramics, carvings, and calligraphy displayed throughout.

Continue on foot through Chawanzaka, Sannenzaka, and Ninenzaka, historic sloping streets lined with pottery shops, craft stores, and traditional architecture leading toward Kiyomizu-dera. The preserved atmosphere makes this an ideal area for unhurried exploration and final purchases.

The afternoon is free for personal interests, whether revisiting favourite spots or enjoying quiet reflection. In the evening, regroup for a farewell dinner, celebrating shared experiences and the journey’s closing chapter.

DAY 10 | MON 30 NOV | DEPART KYOTO

After breakfast, depart Kyoto for onward travel, carrying with you a deeper understanding of Japan’s artistic spirit, cultural continuity, and quiet beauty.
