Damaraland Camp

Damaraland, Namibia

Unique desert wildlife

The Kunene region, formerly known as the Kaokoveld, is situated in north-west Namibia and has one of the harshest environments on the planet, with vistas across stark plains, ancient valleys, rugged peaks and desolate coastline.  The vegetation that fringes the river courses provides sustenance to a diverse array of superbly adapted desert wildlife like black rhino, elephant, springbok, gemsbok, giraffe and Hartmanns’ mountain zebra. The most reliable source of water here is the fog created when the icy Atlantic waters meet the warm air of the coast.

Damaraland Camp is situated in the Torra Conservancy, one of Namibia’s best areas for scenery, offering views over the  plains with a stunning ochre-purple mountain backdrop. Ten large en suite, adobe-style thatched units are raised off the ground, each with a walk-in dressing area and a large deck on which to sit and contemplate the desert.  The spacious living area comprises a dining area, and swimming pool.  New technology combined with ancient knowledge has produced an eco-friendly yet high-performance design in this unique camp. An open campfire and outdoor ‘boma’ are enjoyed during calm evenings and stargazing is superb, thanks to the crystal-clear night skies.

Activities include nature drives and walks during which guests can see species such as desert-adapted elephant, gemsbok, kudu and springbok, and black rhino as well as rare succulent plants.  Damaraland Camp is the result of an award-winning partnership between Wilderness and the Torra Conservancy.

Thank you for putting together the ancestral adventure of a lifetime. I cannot speak highly enough of the trip. The transfers went smoothly, the accommodation was excellent, the drivers were amazing as they manoeuvred through the traffic and every tour guide had a great deal of knowledge and information. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The contrast of poverty and riches of the country was striking, from the beggars in the street and struggles of the poor to the spectacular, impressive sights of the forts and monuments. There were so many highlights. A moment in time that will never happen again.

Exellent and wonderful, reaching way above expectations.

We wanted the opportunity to see as many wildlife parks as possible and the Classic Safari Company provided an action-packed itinerary that included six, with 11 tiger sightings and nine leopard. This was overlaid with an introduction to Jaisalmer, Jaipur and the 'real' India. Pench and Panna were the hidden gems of a really great trip, very well organised, seamless and enjoyable. As a solo traveller I felt incredibly safe at all times. I want to go back!

Mark Taylor

The trip exceeded my expectations and was the best family holiday I have ever had. Our children simply loved it and now I know more about African wildlife than they do about our own farm animals.
