In a country jam-packed with vast, strikingly beautiful landscapes, Hoanib Valley Camp is located in perhaps the most spectacular of them all in Kaokoland, deep north-western Namibia. Here towering mountains, sand dunes, and huge expanses of desert are scattered with unique wildlife and nomadic Himba settlements, although it remains one of Namibia’s most remote and wild environments.

Hoanib Vally Camp is a joint venture between the local communities and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, the world’s only Africa-wide giraffe conservation organisation. The six guest tents blend seamlessly into their rugged environment with colours, textures and patterns inspired by the rich ochre of the dunes and the geometric patterns of the Himba. A central mess tent provides relaxed lounge areas... and dining space while a campfire area draws people together in the evenings. All building materials were locally sourced and you’ll find furniture shaped by local Rundu carpenters, work by Himba carvers and baskets weaved by the people of the Omba Project in Windhoek. The whole camp is built to the highest green standards being entirely solar powered, and constructed using recycled-material composite materials.

Activities centre around the area’s wildlife with game drives and nature walking taking place twice daily to track desert adapted lion, elephant and giraffe. Specialist rhino tracking is also possible and those wishing to interact with the locals might like to meet the Herero people for an authentic cultural experience. If you are interested in giraffe conservation you can meet researchers and learn more about the critical research projects happening in the area in collaboration with and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.

CONSERVATION

Hoanib Valley Camp is a joint venture with the local community and with the NGO the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF). GCF are the longest running giraffe conservation charity in Africa and are the leaders in cutting edge giraffe research. In Hoanib, their research not only focuses on the desert-adapted giraffe in the area, but also helps to monitor elephant and general game.

Very few people realise the giraffe are endangered and they are often over-shadowed by high profile species such as rhino and elephant. Through their genetic work, Dr. Fennessy and the GCF have discovered four distinct species of giraffe across Africa, instead of what was formally thought to be sub-species – crucial information concerning the future of giraffe populations across the continent. 1.5% of the camp’s gross revenue is given to conservation, and the GCF is one of the partners who receives funds.

We wanted the opportunity to see as many wildlife parks as possible and the Classic Safari Company provided an action-packed itinerary that included six, with 11 tiger sightings and nine leopard. This was overlaid with an introduction to Jaisalmer, Jaipur and the 'real' India. Pench and Panna were the hidden gems of a really great trip, very well organised, seamless and enjoyable.
