Along the cracked and crop-less landscape on the road between Maun and Francistown, where elephants tear up any tree that dares to raise its head, a large grey hulk looms into sight at the edge of the road – a giant anteater! Follow the side road pointed out by that anteater snout and you will discover the intriguingly named Planet Baobab – a funky oasis in the middle of nowhere.

This is the Baobab capital of the world where the average age of each tree is 4000 years, and the boundless salt pans of the Makgadikgadi, a lunar landscape the size of Switzerland, lie beyond.

You can enjoy game drives onto the salt pans and ride quad bikes into nothingness. A treat is the ability to spend a night sleeping under the stars in the middle of the Pans. Also on offer are walks with the local Bushmen and the chance to experience an unforgettable interaction with a gang of Meerkats. Near to the camp is a village and visits to the local school can be arranged. Accommodation is a traditionally styled mud Kalanga hut with private bathroom and three night packages include all meals and activities.

There is a ’funky’ contemporary African styled bar and dining room area, which is perfect for relaxing in after a busy day exploring the Makgadikgadi Pans. Nearby there is a uniquely designed pool with views across the many baobabs that dot the camp.
