Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls with elephants

In 1855 David Livingstone is thought to have been the first European to see the Falls, and was so moved by their beauty that he declared “on sights as beautiful as this, angels in their flight must have gazed,” and promptly named them after his Queen. Livingstone’s ‘discovery’ would bring celebrity to the Falls and ensure a regular supply of hunters traders, missionaries and more latterly, tourists passing through until the modern day.

The Victoria Falls Safari Lodge embraces the romance of this bygone era while also providing a stylish base for the modern explorer. Located just four kilometres from the thundering Victoria Falls, it is set high on a natural plateau, with a westward facing view over the bordering Zambezi National Park and a big waterhole which attracts an impressive array of wildlife to its water source.

The lodge is built of thatch and timber, rising over several levels to give the impression of a vast open-plan tree house. It offers 72 guest rooms, a central area featuring the award-winning MaKuwa-Kuwa Restaurant, the famous Buffalo Bar, a two-tiered swimming pool and a fitness centre. Further accommodation can be found at the 20-room Victoria Falls Safari Club and across the six split-level Safari Suites, which offer 2+ bedrooms and are ideal for families. All options are set among gardens on the same sprawling site, all within easy walking distance of one another, but they provide a good range of options and configurations to suite most travellers’ needs.

Activities include sunset cruising on the Zambezi, game drives, helicopter rides, white water rafting, the adrenaline highwire and of course, excursions to see Victoria Falls. The lodge’s onsite water hole and hide provide some phenomenal armchair wildlife watching, and there is the opportunity to witness the spectacular sight of hundreds of vultures swooping down and feeding as part of a supplementary feeding program that aids the survival of these remarkable but endangered birds.

With African inspired décor, a great range of accommodation and activities to suit every interest, The Victoria Falls Safari Lodge is a classic option in the area.
