Air Safari

Outback Loop

This iconic yet completely unique itinerary allows you to undertake an epic Outback journey in just six days, seeing the sights that would take weeks, if not months, to visit by road. If you haven’t experienced Australia’s extraordinary Outback, this flying adventure is for you.

Departing Sydney’s Bankstown Airport in your own private aircraft you’ll immerse yourself into the bush, drinking in true Outback hospitality at the iconic remote towns of Birdsville and William Creek, and experiencing sheep station life near Louth. You’ll see the Marree Man and the ‘Big Red’ sand dune, fly over immense landscapes including Lake Frome, The Flinders Ranges and Lake Eyre, walk with dinosaurs in Winton, visit the Qantas Founders Museum in Longreach, dine under the stars, and explore the great achievements of human endeavour in the Outback.

Best of all you’ll travel in style in the comfort of a private aircraft. With no security lines, boarding delays or crowded baggage carousels at airports you can maximise your holiday time and in the company of aviator Phil Hines you’ll enjoy the top class service of a proudly Australian outfit.

Step out into your own backyard and experience the very best of our great nation.

The first leg of our journey takes us to the mining town of Broken Hill in the far west of New South Wales, where we visit the interactive museum of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
After lunch in The Silver City we fly over South Australia’s largest mountain range, the magnificent Flinders Ranges, and the modern geoglyph, The Marree Man. Then witness the natural wonder of Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre, en-route to William Creek. Here we have the opportunity to explore the history of one of Australia’s most remote towns, at the start of the famous Oodnadatta track. This evening we enjoy true Outback hospitality with drinks and dinner at the authentic bush pub. The William Creek Hotel is loved by travellers from all around the world, with a front bar decorated by hundreds of notes, memorabilia and mementos.

Accommodation: The William Creek Hotel

Begin the day with a hearty country breakfast at the Hotel before taking to the air as we make our way over more mesmerising countryside, up through Lake Eyre and The Channel Country, into Queensland. Our next destination is the iconic town of Birdsville, where our plane will taxi us right up to the front door of one of Australia’s most recognised pubs – The 1884 Birdsville Hotel. Free time is scheduled for this afternoon to relax and explore the town and enjoy a beer on the pub’s famous veranda.
At 4pm we travel by four wheel drive bus to experience the stunning sunset over ‘Big Red’, the tallest sand dune in The Simpson Desert. Enjoy a chilled beer or a wine from the Barossa as we stand on the top of the dune to marvel at the amazing panoramic views. This evening we enjoy a traditional pub dinner at the historic pub.

Accommodation: The Birdsville Hotel

After breakfast at the Hotel we farewell Birdsville at 9am to fly to the pioneering town of Longreach. On arrival at the airport our guide from the Qantas Founders Museum will take us on the 747 and Super Constellation Tour. 2020 is an important milestone for the museum, celebrating Qantas’ 100 year anniversary. Lunch will be enjoyed in a private room at the museum, surrounded by aviation history.
This afternoon we unwind at our five star glamping accommodation, the Mitchell Grass Retreat, where we will be spending two nights. At 4pm our local guides will collect us for an evening to remember. Beginning with a golden sunset cruise on the Thomson River, our cruise captain will enthral us with tales about the river, its wildlife and Indigenous heritage. We dock at Smithy’s Outback Dinner and Show. Relax under a star-filled sky with table service dining featuring camp-oven themed modern cuisine. Live on stage, talented musical performers will entertain with their songs and stories.

Accommodation: The Mitchell Grass Retreat

An early breakfast at 6.30am to prepare for a busy day of exploring. Enjoy Outback big sky scenery as we travel to the charming and historic town of Winton by private coach. First stop is to visit the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum to enjoy the excellent Age of Dinosaurs Tour. Next we visit the newly rebuilt Waltzing Matilda Museum, celebrating Banjo Patterson’s famous ballad.
On return to Longreach we visit the legendary Stockman’s Hall of Fame. Our tour guide will take us through the museum which showcases the history and culture of rural Australia. Back at our retreat, take a dip in the pool or simply relax on your private deck gazing out to the surrounding Mitchell Grass Plains. This evening our private coach will take us to Nogo Station, where the Kinnon family really share their world. They will draw you in with stories of the pioneers’ struggle through the drought. Experience a station safari by open-top double-decker with a spectacular view of the vast plains. Our evening meal will be enjoyed at a recreation of Captain’s Starlight’s camp under the Outback stars. We will leave with a deeper connection to the true pioneering spirit of Australia.

Accommodation: The Mitchell Grass Retreat

We are back in the air this morning, departing Longreach at 9am for a beautiful flight over Queensland’s Channel Country. Enjoy endless horizons filled with deep sand hills and orange escarpments. This afternoon we land at the outback town of Louth. Enjoy a drink at Shindy’s Inn, overlooking The Darling River.
We take an Outback dirt track to Trilby Station, a family owned 320,000 acre sheep station. Recapture the spirit of wide open spaces as we enjoy drinks and canapés, admiring the stunning sunset over this vast landscape. Over a home cooked dinner under the stars you will hear about life on the station with our hosts Liz and Gary Murray (fifth generation farmers in this region).

Accommodation: Trilby Station

Waking up in our peaceful surroundings, guests can enjoy a morning stroll along the walking tracks, meandering amongst the River Red Gums beside The Darling. Walk with the wildlife… smell the bush. After a country cooked breakfast, our host Liz will take us on a walking tour to see the state of the art shearing shed and aircraft hangar.
A traditional shearer’s morning tea, Smoko, is waiting for us at the neighbouring historic Dunlop Station. This was the first sheep station in the world to use mechanical shears and our host Kim is keen to share its fascinating history. We will also tour the homestead, dating back to 1886. Our farewell lunch is back at Shindy’s Inn, where we can reflect on our Outback adventures. Enjoy the scenery as we relax on our final flight back to Bankstown Airport, Sydney.

Phil Hines

Phil (pictured in plane) has been flying since 1990 and holds licences for both fixed wing and rotary aircraft as well as a commercial helicopter licence. He has flown multi engine charters, scheduled Regular Public Transport flights, and also has agricultural ratings in both aeroplane and helicopters. Outback and bush flying has been a big part of his aviation history and he has placed second in the Royal Flying Doctor Service Outback Air Race - twice! There’s barely a patch of our great land he hasn’t seen from the air. Safe to say he knows his stuff. On top of all that he’s just a bloody good bloke – a cheerful ‘salt of the Earth’ type from a farming background with plenty of tales to tell. A great host!

Exellent and wonderful, reaching way above expectations.
