A small group journey for women

Ultimate Namibia

Departs May 2025

The sound of silence

Namibia is a vast country, even by African standards, but with a population of a mere 2.5 million it has one of the lowest population densities in the world. Aswell as feeling delightfully empty, it is also an ‘ageless land’ with rich displays of stone-age rock art, petrified forests where fossilised tree trunks have lain for over 280 million years, and sand dunes that shift with the passing of time. Culturally it offers a time-warping blend of ancient tribal customs, Germanic influence and modern city life, which all collide in unlikely, and beguiling, harmony.

This unique itinerary combines the best of the country’s wildlife, scenery and culture. In the wilds of Etosha, we’ll head out on safari to spot elephant, lion and leopard, and relish the rare opportunity to track white rhino, since the reserve holds one of the largest rhino custodianships in the country. In Damaraland we’ll see weird and wonderful rock formations and bizarre-looking vegetation, and meet the Himba people, known for their intricate hairstyles and traditional adornments. In sharp contrast we’ll stroll the Germanic coastal town of Swakopmund, soaking up the cool ocean breezes as we peruse the shops and galleries, before heading to Sossusvlei where we’ll take two steps forward and one step back climbing the world’s highest free-standing sand dunes. The scenery is just breathtaking – unimaginable in scale and grandeur – and any landscape photographers will be in their element.

Throughout, we’ll engage with the local people in a relaxed and authentic way, whether that’s learning the intricate beauty regime of the Himba as they cleanse themselves in smoke, admiring the traditional Victorian dresses of the Herero ladies sashaying across the desert, reading with the children of the Little Bugs Early Development centre, or chatting with the founder of the Penduka Development Trust, which strives to empower women.

As always, we’ll undertake our safari in signature ‘Journeys for Women’ style, staying in beautiful accommodation, indulging in touches of luxury, and enjoying the company of the very best guides and hosts.

Namibia is remarkable in its grandeur and timelessness, and this carefully curated itinerary will embrace its wonder in every way. It will bring a whole new level of understanding to the word ‘wilderness’, leaving you astounded and inspired.

You will love

  • Rare desert-adapted wildlife
  • The Himba and Herero women
  • Staggering sand dunes
  • Schools, sewing projects & empowerment initiatives
  • Small group of likeminded travellers

15 UNFORGETTABLE DAYS

DAY 1 | MONDAY 19 MAY - ARRIVE WINDHOEK

Arrive in Namibia today and after landing at Windhoek’s International Hosea Kutako Airport, about 40km outside the city, we will be welcomed by our representative who will transfer us to The Weinberg Hotel where we will overnight in one of their beautifully designed rooms.  The remainder of our afternoon and evening is at leisure.

Overnight: The Weinberg Hotel

DAY 2 | TUESDAY 20 MAY - WINDHOEK

Today is at leisure to recuperate from our flight and prepare for the adventure that lies ahead.

An optional tour of the city is on offer, along with a visit to the Penduka Development Trust – a female empowerment project that strives to elevate women by creating opportunities in entrepreneurship. Essentially they produce beautiful embroidered pieces, hand-made jewellery and recycled glass beads which will also provide us with our first retail therapy opportunity!

Early this evening the naturalist guide who will accompany us on our safari will provide a briefing on our upcoming adventure and will answer any questions you may have. A Welcome Dinner will be hosted this evening.

Overnight: The Weinberg Hotel

DAY 3 | WEDNESDAY 21 MAY - WINDHOEK TO ETOSHA

After breakfast depart Windhoek and head north through small towns and farming communities as you make your way to your lodge situated on the private Ongava reserve on the southern Etosha National Park boundary where you will stay for three nights.

This afternoon, embark on a sundowner drive as introduction to the Ongava Reserve before returning to the lodge after sunset for dinner. This evening you can enjoy further game viewing from the comfort of your rooms overlooking the lodges floodlit waterhole.

Overnight: Ongava Tented Camp

DAYS 4 & 5 | THURSDAY 22 & FRIDAY 23 MAY - ETOSHA

The next two full days will be spent game-viewing in the Etosha National Park from the comfort of your safari vehicle. Exploring the park, stopping at selected waterholes to observe the game gathered there along the way. Lunch can be enjoyed back at the camps or enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic location inside the park. A special encounter is white rhino tracking – Ongava holds one of the largest rhino custodianships for the Namibian government: these have been set up in safe havens throughout the country in the hopes of breeding rhino up to more sustainable numbers and reintroducing them into areas where they previously flourished.

The afternoons can also be spent on scheduled afternoon game drives on the lodge’s private reserve searching for more game before returning to the lodge for dinner.

Overnight: Ongava Tented Camp

DAY 6 | SATURDAY 24 MAY - ETOSHA TO DAMARALAND

After an early breakfast, you continue your safari, heading west into the wonderful and diverse region of Damaraland. Typified by displays of colour, magnificent table topped mountains, rock formations and bizarre-looking vegetation, Damaraland offers some of the most breath-taking scenery on the safari. The present-day landscape has been formed by the erosion of wind, water and geological forces which have formed rolling hills, dunes, gravel plains and ancient river terraces. It is the variety and loneliness of the area as well as the scenic splendour which will reward and astound you, giving an authentic understanding of the word ‘wilderness’.

Time allowing, you can choose to visit the intriguing rock engravings of Twyfelfontein (a UNESCO Heritage Site) including some 2,500 prehistoric engravings that depict wildlife, animal spoor and abstract motifs – perhaps the largest and finest collection of petroglyphs in Africa. Otherwise, enjoy an afternoon of leisure with a sundowner from the camp’s beautiful viewpoint.

Overnight: Mowani Mountain Camp

DAY 7 | SUNDAY 25 MAY - DAMARALAND TO HOANIB VALLEY CAMP

It’s up early this morning for breakfast, after which you set off through picturesque and ever-changing desert scenery to reach Hoanib Valley Lodge, keeping a keen look out for wildlife such as giraffes, oryx, or even elephants if you are lucky as you along the way.

Depending on your time of arrival, you may have the afternoon available to relax, or your guide can take you on a short walk around the area and return to camp for sundowners.

Overnight: Hoanib Valley Camp

DAY 8 | MONDAY 26 MAY - HOANIB VALLEY CAMP

Explore the incredible landscape and its inhabitants with your guide, searching for desert adapted elephants and other wildlife, heading out on nature walks, and visiting to a local Himba community.

The Himba, Tjimba and other Herero people are traditionally semi-nomadic pastoralists who tend to tend from one watering place to another. The largest group is the Himba, semi-nomads who live in scattered settlements throughout the Kunene Region, and have lived a relatively isolated existence for centuries.  They are a tall, slender and statuesque people, characterized especially by their proud yet friendly bearing. The women especially are noted for their unusual sculptural beauty, enhanced by intricate hairstyles and traditional adornments.  They rub their bodies with red ochre and fat, a treatment that protects their skins against the harsh desert climate. The homes of the Himba of Kaokoland are simple, cone-shaped structures of saplings, bound together with palm leaves and plastered with mud and dung. The men build the structures, while the women mix the clay and do the plastering. A fire burns in the headman’s hut day and night, to keep away insects and provide light and heating.

A family may move from one home to another several times a year to seek grazing for their goats and cattle.   A Himba woman spends as much as three hours a day on her toilette. First she bathes, then she anoints herself with her own individually prepared mixture which not only protects her skin from the harsh desert sun, but also keeps insects away and prevents her body hair from falling out.  She uses another mixture of butter fat, fresh herbs and black coals to rub on her hair, and ‘steams’ her clothes regularly over the permanent fire. Men, women and children adorn themselves with striking necklaces, bracelets, anklets and belts made from iron and shell beads.

Overnight: Hoanib Valley Camp

DAY 9 | TUESDAY 27 MAY - HOANIB VALLEY CAMP TO DAMARALAND

You depart early morning, continuing your safari back to Damaraland where you will spend two nights at the beautiful Onduli Ridge, which is built at the base of two south facing granite outcrops, allowing for magnificent views of Namibia’s highest mountain, the Brandberg,

Arrival at the camp will be in the mid to late afternoon, with time to enjoy sundowners appreciating the unique surroundings of your camp in the Damaraland wilderness.

Overnight: Onduli Ridge

DAY 10 | WEDNESDAY 28 MAY - DAMARALAND

After an early breakfast you will be treated to an exciting private 4×4 excursion along the ephemeral river valleys to explore this remarkable region and to search for game, including the elusive desert adapted elephants if they are in the area.

Desert adapted elephant in Kaokoland and the Namib walk further for water and fodder than any other elephant in Africa ans their ranges are vast, following water courses , right to the Skeleton Coast. Not a separate species or even a subspecies, they are an ecotype unique to Namibia, behaviorally adapted to hyper-arid conditions. Elephants in Mali on the southwestern fringe of the Sahara Desert are the only others known to survive in similar conditions.

As the elephants are mostly active in the mornings you will normally have the best chance to see them then before returning to camp for lunch. However, you also have the option to take a picnic lunch to enjoy in the shade of a large Ana tree by the riverbed, ideally while watching a herd of elephant browsing nearby.

Your private guide will arrange to fit in a visit to Twyfelfontein and spend time at a Damara homestead to learn more about their culture and ways of life, much of which has been lost but is now honoured as part of a Living Museum initiative. You can also explore the area on foot or by bicycle or simply relax and enjoy some well-deserved leisure time.

Overnight: Onduli Ridge

DAY 11 | THURSDAY 29 MAY - DAMARALAND TO SWAKOPMUND

Today’s journey takes you in a southwesterly direction past the Brandberg, Namibia’s tallest mountain standing at 2,574m in height, before heading south to reach the coastal town of Swakopmund, stopping en route to view the hauntingly beautiful Zeila shipwreck. After checking in at your hotel, there should be time this afternoon to wander around town and along the waterfront on foot if desired, before heading out to dinner at one of the popular restaurants in town with your guide.

Swakopmund resembles a small, German coastal resort nestled between the desert and the sea. It boasts a charming combination of German colonial architecture blended with good hotels, shops, restaurants, museums, craft centers, galleries and cafés. Although the sea is a little chilly for swimming there are pleasant beaches and the cooler climate is refreshing after the time spent in the desert.

Overnight: Strand Hotel

DAY 12 | FRIDAY 30 MAY - SWAKOPMUND

This morning is at leisure and can either be spent relaxing at your hotel, exploring the town on foot, shopping, or taking part in one of the many adventure activities on offer in and around Swakopmund and Walvis Bay (all at an additional cost – it is advisable to pre-book activities to avoid disappointment). These include “Living Desert” excursions of the amazingly diverse Namib Desert biosphere, sand boarding, marine cruises on the Walvis Bay lagoon and outer harbour, sea kayaking off Pelican Point, scenic flights, camel rides, and many more.

This afternoon you will enjoy a lovely gin tasting with Stillhouse Atlantic, produced in Swakopmund by Sandy Le Roux and her husband. The distillery started in 2017 as a hobby for Sandy who is responsible for distilling these delicious juniper spirits. She experimented with various spirits, but mainly gin. She decided to increase her knowledge of the process by doing a course on gin making in South Africa. This was the catalyst that ignited her passion for distilling and soon afterwards she completed the master distiller’s course.  Each bottle is a collector’s item containing uniquely designed art and your gin tasting will include a variety of flavours and accompaniments, prepared to individual tastes.

Dinner tonight will be enjoyed at another popular restaurant in town or at one of the many restaurants of choice at your hotel.

Overnight: Strand Hotel

DAY 13 | SATURDAY 31 MAY - SWAKOPMUND TO SOSSUSVLEI

The fascinating drive today takes you south past the port town of Walvis Bay where you have the option to visit the lagoon to see the interesting mix of pelicans, flamingos, and other seabirds. Continuing southeast, the journey takes you through awesome and ever-changing desert landscapes via the impressive Gaub and Kuiseb canyons to meet the dunes at the settlement of Solitaire. You arrive at your exclusive Camp Sossus in the mid-afternoon where you will stay for the next two nights whilst you explore the remarkable sights of the Namib Desert with your guide.

This afternoon you will have the opportunity to explore the private Namib Tsaris Conservancy by mountain plus bike, foot or vehicle, culminating in a special first Namibian sundowner at a scenic location. You’ll return to freshen up for dinner and an evening around the campfire. For the next two evenings you’ll also have the opportunity to sleep out under the Namibian night sky from the comfort of your own star bed attached to your room, a truly unforgettable experience.

Sossusvlei is world famous for its towering apricot colored sand dunes and contrasting deathly white clay pan – but the pictures could never prepare you for the reality. Nearby, Deadvlei, is known for its striking camel thorn trees which still stand erect as they once grew and the Sesriem Canyon, a narrow gorge about 1.5km long,  exposes millions of years worth of colourful sediments. The whole area is a photographer’s paradise!

Overnight: Camp Sossus

DAY 14 | SUNDAY 01 JUNE - SOSSUSVLEI / NAMIB DESERT

Experience the magical beauty of the Namib Naukluft National Park with your guide as you rise early in the morning for a memorable excursion into the dunes of Sossusvlei to capture them whilst the light is soft and shadows accentuate their towering shapes and curves. This area boasts some of the highest free-standing sand dunes in the world. Your guide will give you insight on the formation of the Namib Desert and its myriad of fascinating creatures and plants that have adapted to survive these harsh environs.

After exploring this area and hopefully climbing one of the giant sand dunes, you enjoy a relaxed picnic breakfast in the shade of a camel thorn tree.

You’ll return to Camp Sossus in the early afternoon for a late lunch which will cap off a thrilling morning, but not before visiting the fascinating Sesriem Canyon. The rest of the afternoon will be at leisure (from experience, this is usually welcomed after exhilarating mornings in the dunes), with the option to head out on a nature drive with your guide later in the day if desired for another stunning sunset. Another afternoon option would be to go out for a ride on the mountain plus bikes to experience the desert landscape in a more intimate way.

During your stay you will also visit the Little Bugs Early Childhood Development Centre and lower primary school in Sossusvlei.  Little Bugs was established in 2011 with three students from the area but due to demand quickly became a school for many families in the region.  As the kids enjoyed quality education in Sossusvlei, the need arose to provide support and training for the mothers in the area and with the focus being on community development, Little Bugs started a sewing project, in which any person within the community is encouraged to join and learn new sewing techniques. All items are handmade and are sold to the public and include among others reusable shopping bags made from upcycled Hot Air balloon material, which work especially well when carrying heavy contents. The aim of the project is to create a sense of community while teaching a new skill and assisting the sustainability of the school.

Overnight: Camp Sossus

DAY 15 | MONDAY 02 JUNE - WINDHOEK

After a leisurely breakfast you bid farewell to the Namib Desert, traversing the Great Escarpment and scenic Khomas Hochland highlands to make your way back to Windhoek for our final night.

This afternoon we will visit the NamCrafts and Craft Centre or some last minute retail therapy, or you may prefer to simply relax in our hotel.

Tonight, we will enjoy a farewell dinner with our guide to reminisce about the trip highlights and to say your goodbyes.

Overnight: Galton House
