The Land that Time Forgot
Beginning in Tokyo, once Edo, the journey opens with a gentle immersion into contemporary Japan through architecture, design and daily life. From the capital, the route climbs into the Japanese Alps, revealing a slower rhythm shaped by mountains, craftsmanship and seasonal cuisine. Historic Matsumoto introduces feudal Japan through its original black castle and the work of avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama, before the trail continues to Takayama, where Edo-period streets, morning markets and family-run breweries preserve centuries-old traditions.
Kanazawa forms the cultural heart of the journey. Here, exquisite gardens, gold leaf artisans, samurai districts and quietly atmospheric geisha quarters reveal the refinement of the former Maeda domain. A day journey to the remote Noto Peninsula offers dramatic coastlines, ancient salt-making traditions and enduring rural life along the Sea of Japan.
The journey culminates in Fukui Prefecture at Eiheiji, one of the spiritual centres of Soto Zen. Set deep within cedar forests, this active monastery offers rare participation in meditation and dawn chanting alongside resident monks. Returning to Tokyo for a final evening, the experience closes not with spectacle, but with reflection, connection and a lasting sense of having encountered Japan beyond the surface.

A 12-DAY JOURNEY THROUGH HISTORY
DAY 1 | SUN 08 NOV | ARRIVE TOKYO | 3 NIGHTS
Arrival into Tokyo marks the beginning of your journey into Japan’s layered past and present. After clearing customs and immigration, those who have arranged transfers are met by a local assistant and driven privately into the city. The hotel sits in Ginza, Tokyo’s most refined district, where contemporary architecture, department stores, galleries and restaurants sit side by side with long-established traditions.
With arrivals spread throughout the afternoon and evening, this first day is intentionally gentle. Time is yours to rest after the flight, take a quiet stroll through Ginza’s illuminated streets, or simply settle in and adjust to the rhythm of the city. Tomorrow, the journey truly begins.
Accommodation: Millennium Mitsui Garden Hotel Ginza
DAY 2 | MON 09 NOV | TOKYO
Today is about understanding Tokyo from the ground up, moving through the city as locals do, on foot and by rail. Over breakfast, the group gathers for introductions and a briefing on the journey ahead before heading out into the city.
The morning begins at the Nezu Museum, a masterwork of contemporary Japanese architecture by Kengo Kuma. The museum’s understated lines, natural materials and serene garden walkways create a seamless dialogue between art, architecture and landscape. Inside, a carefully curated collection of pre-modern Japanese and East Asian art provides cultural context for much of what lies ahead on the journey.
From here, wander through Aoyama, one of Tokyo’s most stylish neighbourhoods, arriving at Spiral, an iconic cultural complex where architecture, design, exhibitions and retail blur together. The afternoon sees a return to the hotel, leaving the evening free to explore Tokyo at your own pace, perhaps with dinner in Ginza or a quiet drink nearby.
DAY 3 | TUE 10 NOV | TO MATSUMOTO | 1 NIGHT
This morning, luggage is forwarded ahead to Takayama, allowing you to travel lightly into the Japanese Alps with just an overnight bag. After breakfast, transfer to the station and board the Shinkansen, enjoying a beautifully prepared bento box lunch as landscapes transition from dense city to mountain foothills.
Matsumoto sits beneath the dramatic peaks of the Alps and is best known for its striking original castle. One of only twelve remaining feudal castles in Japan, Matsumoto Castle’s black exterior has earned it the nickname “The Crow.” Exploring its grounds and interiors offers a tangible connection to Japan’s samurai era.
The afternoon also introduces a contrasting cultural layer with a visit to the Matsumoto City Museum of Art, home to works by Yayoi Kusama, whose international fame belies her deep connection to this small alpine city.
Check in to Matsumoto Jujo, a beautifully reimagined ryokan with roots dating back to 1686. The property blends onsen culture, literature, local produce and contemporary design, offering private open-air baths in each room. Dinner is a highlight, tracing ingredients from mountain headwaters to the Sea of Japan, before a deeply restorative night’s rest.
Accommodation: – Matsumoto Jujo, Asama Onsen – 1 Night
Meals: – Breakfast, bento lunch, dinner
DAY 4 | WED 11 NOV | TO TAKAYAMA | 2 NIGHTS
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed walk through Matsumoto’s historic streets, including Nawate-dori and Nakamachi-dori, where traditional kura storehouses now house cafés, craft shops and galleries. The pace is unhurried, allowing time to browse handmade ceramics, lacquerware and woodwork.
Leaving the city, travel through the Azumino countryside to Daio Wasabi Farm, one of Japan’s largest producers of real wasabi. Here, learn about the delicate cultivation process and discover a more nuanced flavour profile than its Western counterpart.
The journey continues deeper into the mountains to Takayama, a town celebrated for its remarkably preserved Edo-period old quarter. On arrival, check in to a traditional ryokan, where tatami floors, futon bedding and hot spring baths offer a deeply Japanese experience. The evening is free to wander Takayama’s lantern-lit streets or relax in the baths.
Accommodation: – Oyado Koto No Yume – 2 Nights
Meals: – Breakfast, lunch, 1 x dinner
DAY 5 | THU 12 NOV | TAKAYAMA
Today brings Takayama’s living traditions into focus. A guided walking tour explores the Miyagawa Morning Market, historic government buildings, and beautifully preserved merchant streets where craftsmanship remains central to daily life.
Visits to the Yoshijima Heritage House and Kusakabe Folk Museum reveal the architectural ingenuity and social structures of wealthy Edo-period merchants, while sakabayashi cedar balls hanging under eaves quietly signal sake-making traditions still in practice.
After lunch, step inside a local sake brewery to learn about regional brewing styles before enjoying free time to explore independently. The evening culminates with dinner at a Japanese restaurant designated as a tangible cultural property, where cuisine and setting combine to evoke Takayama’s past.
DAY 6 | FRI 13 NOV | TO KANAZAWA VIA HIDA-FURUKAWA | 4 NIGHTS
Leaving Takayama, travel first to Hida-Furukawa, a lesser-known mountain town with white-plastered storehouses lining quiet canals. Walking through Shirakabe Dozogai Street feels like stepping back in time, offering a more intimate glimpse of rural Japan.
Continue onward to Kanazawa, once the seat of the powerful Maeda clan and now one of Japan’s most culturally rich cities. After check-in at your centrally located hotel near Kanazawa Station, gather for dinner and an introduction to the city that will be home for the next four nights.
Accommodation: – Hyatt Centric Kanazawa – 4 Nights
Meals: – Breakfast, lunch, 2 x dinner
DAY 7 | SAT 14 NOV | KANAZAWA
The day begins at Omicho Market, Kanazawa’s culinary heart for over four centuries. Stalls brim with seafood from the Sea of Japan, seasonal produce and regional specialities, providing insight into local food culture.
From here, explore Kanazawa’s historic chaya districts, including quieter Kazuemachi and the beautifully preserved Higashi Chaya area. Visits to traditional tea houses and geisha residences reveal the artistry, etiquette and architecture of this refined world.
Gold leaf craftsmanship, for which Kanazawa is world-renowned, adds another layer to the day, before returning to the hotel with the evening free to explore further.
DAY 8 | SUN 15 NOV | KANAZAWA
Today blends samurai heritage, modern art and Zen philosophy. Begin in Nagamachi, the former samurai district, visiting Nomura-ke residence with its exquisite garden and family artefacts.
At the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, innovative design encourages exploration from multiple perspectives, while the D.T. Suzuki Museum offers a contemplative pause, its minimalist garden embodying Zen principles.
After enjoying Kaga-style cuisine for lunch, wander through Kenrokuen Garden, considered one of Japan’s three most beautiful gardens. Each season reveals a different character, and autumn brings particularly rich colours. Evening is at leisure.
DAY 9 | MON 16 NOV | NOTO PENINSULA EXCURSION
A full-day excursion leads into the remote Noto Peninsula, a rugged landscape of coastline, terraces and enduring traditions. Arrive in Wajima for its famed morning market, operating for over a thousand years, before continuing north to the dramatic Senmaida rice terraces cascading towards the sea.
Traditional salt-making methods, unchanged for centuries, offer insight into coastal livelihoods, while visits to local cultural spaces and artisan stops round out the day. Returning to Kanazawa, enjoy a farewell dinner celebrating the flavours of Ishikawa Prefecture.
DAY 10 | TUE 17 NOV | TO EIHEIJI | 1 NIGHT
This morning, luggage is forwarded to Tokyo as you travel light once again. Begin with a visit to a design-led sake brewery inspired by the concept of shizen, or nature, tasting a range of refined sake styles.
From here, travel into the forested mountains to Eiheiji, Fukui Prefecture, one of the spiritual centres of Soto Zen. Founded in 1244, the monastery remains an active training ground for monks. Staying within the temple complex offers a rare opportunity to experience monastic rhythms, from meditation and vegetarian cuisine to quiet reflection amid cedar forests.
Accommodation: – Hakujukan, Eiheiji – 1 Night
Meals: – Breakfast, lunch, dinner
DAY 11 | WED 18 NOV | TO TOKYO | 1 NIGHT
Before dawn, those who wish may join the monks for morning chanting, an atmospheric and deeply grounding experience as voices rise together in the half-light.
After breakfast, transfer to Fukui Station and return to Tokyo by Shinkansen. The final evening is spent together in Ginza, reflecting on the journey over a farewell meal.
Accommodation: – Millennium Mitsui Garden Hotel Ginza – 1 Night
Meals: – Breakfast & farewell dinner
DAY 12 | THU 19 NOV | DEPART TOKYO
Enjoy a relaxed final breakfast before transferring to the airport, carrying home memories of a Japan experienced slowly, thoughtfully and with rare access to its living traditions.
